Training Approach
CALM MINDSET
We set your dog up for success by fostering calmness. A calm dog is more receptive to learning and better equipped to make good decisions. Excitement is often the root of nuisance behaviors like jumping and barking.
CLEAR COMMUNICATION
We bridge the gap between you and your dog by communicating in ways they understand. While humans rely on verbal communication, dogs interact differently. You’ll learn how to speak their "language" to foster clearer, more effective communication.
BALANCED RELATIONSHIP
We focus on building a healthy relationship based on trust, respect, and love. Dogs are natural followers, and when we bring them into our homes it is our responsibility to become fair, reliable leaders.
Long-lasting results are built on small, daily habits.
About Emily Acqua, Owner and Head Trainer
Hi, I’m Emily Acqua, the owner and head trainer at Dogs in Progress. I’m passionate about helping dog owners strengthen their relationships with their dogs through clear communication and fair, effective training.
My journey into professional dog training started with an eye-opening realization. Like many dog owners, I initially blamed my dog for his challenging behaviors — things like pulling on the leash, barking for attention, and disregarding commands. I was doing my best to care for him, so I figured the problem must be with him, not with me.
The truth, however, was that the problem stemmed from my own misconceptions. Before studying dog psychology, I was unknowingly interpreting my dog’s actions through a human lens. While my intentions were always good, I simply didn’t understand his needs or behavior. Once I recognized this and began adjusting my own habits, everything began to change — both in my dog’s behavior and in our relationship.
Through clarity, consistency, and patience, I was able to shift my approach and improve our communication. This experience ignited my interest in dog psychology, and now I’m committed to helping other dog owners achieve the same transformation.
In 2021, I joined Happy Paws Boston, a training-based dog walking company, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself fully in the world of dog psychology. Under the mentorship of various canine professionals, I gained hands-on experience and learned from some of the best in the field.
I have studied directly with renowned trainers such as Heather Beck (K9 Lifeline), Marc Goldberg (Chicago Dog Trainer), the Monks of New Skete, Cheri Wulff Lucas, and Ridge Vogel (Pack Leader University). Through ongoing learning and daily practice, I have honed my skills and developed a balanced approach to dog training — one that addresses core behaviors while respecting each dog’s unique temperament, preferences, and circumstances.
My personal journey — from frustrated dog owner to confident pack leader — has shaped my training philosophy. I believe in empowering dog owners to lead with confidence, clarity, and compassion. My goal is not to simply show you how well your dog can behave with me, but to teach you the tools and strategies to achieve long-lasting results on your own.
If you’re ready to strengthen your relationship with your dog and become the confident leader your dog needs, I would love to work with you.
